Follow Up: The Pink Eye, Mom Stays Home

Conjunctivitis you are a pain in my EYEtis.

I present the:

  • VERY sick
  • VERY unable to go to school
  • VERY 8yrold

What else do you do when you are stuck home with your little brother all day?
You play Monopoly with your little brother AND the cat of course!

Praise be, I haven't caught the dreaded pinkivitis yet.. but when I feel even the tiniest itch on my ankle I can't help but scratch... my EYE? How stupid is that?

I think 1400 people suggested different ways to tackle an 8yrold's Pink Eye.

Go ahead... tell me what your grandma did when you were little?
The best one? Shredded Potatoes... Yes. Make a little compress out of homefries and place on your eye! {my only question is...what do you do with them afterwards?}

Homefries vs Hashbrowns? I couldn't decide so we just made both.

I actually liked the chamomile tea bag compress suggestion.. and I was all set to try it but then I realized she had fallen asleep, and I was thirsty. So I drank it instead.

And while it's true that a lot, most, {who the heck knows?} of the pink eye cases are viral and antibiotics won't work, everyone says the drops will get your kid back to school {and you free to continue your VERY important SAHM life.} What is that about??

I have a 24 hour rule. Ear infections, croup, etc... (except for fevers they get the three day rule).

If after 24 hours the symptoms are worse and not getting better, then yes we head to the Dr. So we'll see in the morning when she wakes up, whether her eye is in fact glued shut like this morning, or merely red. In either scenario. I'm stuck homebound for one more day. But this time. I am so taking her out on errands with me. People at Safeway.. just walk the other way when you see us coming. I've instructed her not to lick ANYthing. And she isn't allowed to kiss till she is 28 so no worries, right?

Oh also.

When I called the school to excuse her with the Pink Eye excuse? The principal answered. She said, "OH GOOD!" after I explained that she was staying home. I think they agreed with my choice don't you?

How long do you wait to see the Pediatrician for ear infections, croup, fevers? {Pink Eye?}

Later, she asked me what's a black eye then, mom?

Never had pink eye myself, but anything eye related is so awkward. I constantly get sunscreen in my eye. Yow! Painful.

Hope you daughter is on the mend.

I go to the dr. the first day of anything throat-realated with fever due to likelihood of strep. Vomiting we stay at home. I took a vomiting child to the dr. It was miserable as she felt rotten. We had to wait around for her to give a urine sample. Not doing that again. However, I do watch for dehydration and push small drinks of liquid.

that does look yucky.

We were blessed with the booger eye a couple yrs ago on the first morning of our vacation! it was great to be states away with a 5mth old who had green gunk in her eyes.

We have been lucky with ear infections and only have had a couple between the kids.

It just depends on the illness how long I wait to call, fever not really cause I know they will do nothing. If they are hacking and look to be on deaths door I call and get them in.

I hope it clears up soon!

BTW, I am going to try to be able to come in an hour late next Thursday. I have an hour worth of incentive leave, so I will see.

Ugh, we have only had to deal with one case of pink eye and I'm pretty sure it just went away on it's own.

Hope everyone is on the mend soon!

pink eye - I have drops at home always - unless I run out I don't take them. For simple colds - I don't go unless they are sick PAST 10 days. Unless it is strep - then we go!

I hear you. My 5-year-old stayed home today with the exact same thing. No fun:-(

I always thought you used antibiotic eye drops to combat the bacteria.

hey there - it's wonderful that you're back in the posting-groove! I missed you while you were occupied with other things... Anyways, an NP's note about your daughters eye: the "crusting shut" is basically considered diagnostic of a bacterial infection and she should get antibiotic eye drops. I usually prescribe the drops for older kids (8yo counts) and reserve the systemic AB's for older kids. So call your doc - describe the crusting and temporal progression - he may just call you a rx for drops into the pharmacy without a visit.
Good luck!
(ps - will write back to email as soon as finals are over next week! xo, M)

oooh the dreaded (and so contagious) pink eye. Poor you!

When I suspect a case on the horizon, I make a warm water and salt soak for the eyes. It seems to help. And I'm very big on homeopathics, especially for viruses!

Best wishes
