Sloppy Joes: My Mom's Recipe

Only... we always called this Barbecue.

You know how you can follow your mom's recipe EXACTLY and still it does't taste the same?? This is one of those examples. We love it, but it never comes out quite like I remember.

Ingredients:
Brown 1lb hamburger with half an onion, chopped.
Add 1 can Campbell's Tomato Soup
Add 1 can Campbell's Chicken Gumbo Soup (I know, just trust my mom here)
Add 1-2 tsp. Cumin

That's it. My mom usually makes 3 or even 4 times this amount for giant family gatherings. Once everything is added she throws it all in the crock pot and keeps it on warm till needed. I usually just simmer it for 20-30 minutes and then serve.

We eat our Sloppy Joes open face style on toasted buns. And we always called it 'barbecue' I don't know why? How do you eat your Joes? And what other Cambell's soup recipes do you love?

AND... I put in a call to my BlogWellDone pal, Chris, he says he has a veggie version of sloppy joes, I'm getting ready to go vegetarian for the summer, wanna join me?

This looks so so good... now I just got back from the grocery store and I wish I had bought a can of gumbo soup. Yum.

I actually prefer my sloppy joe pretty much plain. No bun. Occasionally I stick some tortilla chips in there....

I'll basically eat tortilla chips with anything.

Anyway, thanks for the recipe. Looks delish....

That is making me sooo hungry! YUM. That's just about how it goes with all of my mom's recipes it seems :) Everything is better when mom does it ;) At least, that is how my kids act most the time. We love sloppy joes too. I just love them on a bun but my hubs can't stand the "sloppy" part of that. So I have experimented with making it like a sloppy joe pot pie using bisquik on top which he seems to enjoy! Caroline *mommy of two (one with two missing front toofers and the other getting better now from his Eczema - thank you God and Zorbee)

really? I don't eat them. Never been into Sloppy Joes....

Gee, I can't remember the last time I had sloppy joes. We eat them the same way - open face on buns.

My recipe downfall is making something that has a photo. I like photos and I'm usually drawn to that recipe. But then the dreaded compare happens at the end. And my recipe somehow never quite looks like the picture. Wonder why?
Cheers,
Carrie Anne

Sometimes recipes are simply never the same as Mom's even if we do everything the same, I think it is a love thing.

That looks and sounds good, although I don't know about the Chicken Gumbo soup I have never bought it.

But I am making my trip to the grocery tomorrow so I may look into it

Oooooh! Goinf vegetarian for the summer - how exciting! I was veggie for about four years in HS/College, snd have guilty fro years about giving it up. We try to be responsible in our meat consumption - buy locally raised, humane, etc, but i still feel bad. I try to cook veggie meals once or twice a week (when I'm managing to cook, that is). But I have to say that I've never been a fan of the meat substitutes (like in veggie "barbecue"). When I was a vegetarian, i would crave bacon so much that I would Baco-Bits by the handful. How gross is that? One of my favorite vegetarian book is an oldie-but-goodie: 'Diet for a Small Planet'.

Can't wait to hear about your veggie tales this summer! have you joined a CSA? Are the kids and hubby following suit?

Maybe possibly you've inspired me... Hmmmm...

The only kind of sloppy joe I have ever had is the stuff straight from the can. So sad. Thanks for the recipe...gonna have to try it.

Doesn't vegetarian sloppy joe kind of defeat the point?
